Description
The rural grocery stores are relics of a past era. They once played a vital role in small towns for years and then faced fierce competition from the large chain grocery stores as improved highways and interstate roads led the rural customers to the cities and suburbs to shop for food and other staples.
I can remember walking to Wilkinson and Ellis stores with my brothers and sisters to buy food and sodas. It was always a treat when we had a few extra pennies to buy candy, especially tootsie roll pops and red hot jaw breakers. Sometimes, we would ask the storekeeper to open an RC cola or Upper 10 so we could drink them on the way home.
Everything about the old country stores was welcoming and magical from the smell of food, huge cookies, orange dreamsicles, and rolls of bologna with red casing.
