Description
The Emancipation Oak is one of the honored treasures of Hampton, Virginia. It is where the Virginia Peninsula's black community met to hear the reading of President Abraham Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation. It stands proud, full-bodied and towering near the entrance of the Hampton University campus
With limbs sprawling over a hundred feet in diameter, the Emancipation oak is designated as one of the 10 Great Trees of the World by the National Geographic Society.
