Description
Island Harbor is small fishing village that is located on the northeastern side of Anguilla. It is a small fishing village with a rustic charm of a slower-pace forgotten time. At first sight, I knew it was a photographer’s paradise but I had left my camera at my friend’s house.
Upon returning to Island Harbor a week later, I carried my camera and several digital camera memory cards; determined to capture loads of images of the picturesque little fishing village. That day, I saw dozens of vibrantly colored fishing boats of various sizes bobbing in the water while others departed and returned with their catches of the day.
With great anticipation and a savoring taste for fresh fish, locals stood on or near the pier to purchase fish and squirming crustaceans while the young children raced up and down the wooden planks. Fishermen, young and old with darken sun-weathered skin, expertly disemboweled their catches; dropping the innards in the water. Once the fish have been cleaned and sold, the hardy fishermen ready their vessels for a return visit to the sea. It’s all in a day’s effort of hard working fishermen.
I spoke with some of the fishermen about their boats and their hauls for the day. They all responded with pleasant greetings and warm smiles. Some even indulged me when I asked for permission to take their pictures. Upon first glance, some of the fishermen wore head coverings that resembled the “shemagh” worn by the Tuareg men from northern Africa. It is a scarf-type wrap commonly found in arid regions to provide protection from direct sun exposure. I liked that look.
After watching the fishermen, I strolled down the beach and talked with some of the Anguillan locals and expatriates from the US and ended the day at the Pelican Bar sipping red wine and enjoying a delicious rum punch with a lively crowd of locals.
